What E34 actually means

The machine has flagged a problem with its capacitive sensor / the sensor that detects what's in the drum, and it won't run a normal cycle until that reading looks right.

Electrolux machines of this type carry a sensor pair inside the drum area that the control board reads to judge conditions in the drum. E34 is the code the board raises when that capacitive sensor reading fails its check \u2014 it's the same code that appears if the sensor test is run in the engineer's diagnostic mode and doesn't pass. Because the board can't trust what the sensor is telling it, it stops rather than carrying on blind.

What usually causes it

  • Something resting against or bridging the sensor bars inside the drum
  • Residue, detergent film or dirt built up over the sensor area
  • A faulty capacitive sensor
  • Damaged or loose wiring between the sensor and the control board
  • A fault on the control board itself

What you can safely check yourself

Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.

  1. Open the door and check the drum is completely empty \u2014 a sock or small item sitting over the sensor bars is enough to upset the reading
  2. Wipe over the sensor bars and surrounding drum surface with a damp cloth to clear detergent film or residue, then leave the door open to dry
  3. Turn the machine off at the wall for a minute, switch back on and start a short cycle to see if the code clears

When to call someone

This one usually needs an engineer once you have tried the checks above. We cover Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire and Leicestershire, and it's £66 including VAT for an engineer to come out and diagnose it — £84 in total if it's repaired on the visit with no parts needed. Any parts needed are quoted on site before we fit them — you decide. Every repair carries a 90-day workmanship guarantee.

Outside our area? The explanation above still stands — take it to a local engineer and tell them the code. Knowing it saves them time and you money.
