What E64 actually means
The machine has detected the drying air getting far too hot and has shut the drying stage down to protect itself.
On a washer dryer, a temperature sensor sits in the drying air duct. If it reads above 180°C, the control board treats that as an overheat and stops rather than carrying on blowing hot air through the drum. Washing usually still works; it's the drying side that fails.
What usually causes it
- Blocked or restricted drying airflow, so heat can't escape the duct
- Faulty temperature sensor in the drying duct giving a false high reading
- Drying heater staying on when it should switch off
- Damaged wiring to the duct sensor
- Fault on the main control board
What you can safely check yourself
Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.
- Turn the machine off at the wall for a minute, then restart and try a wash-only cycle to see if the fault only appears in drying
- Clean the pump filter and check the drain hose isn't kinked or trapped behind the machine
- Don't overload the drum for drying — an overpacked load restricts airflow
- Make sure the machine isn't pushed tight against a wall or boxed in, so it can draw and vent air
