What E68 actually means

The dryer's motor control board has seen more current going to the motor than it should, and has flagged it.

In Electrolux's own fault table, E68 is logged as a VSC (variable speed control — the inverter that drives the motor) over-current failure. It is one of the codes that normally only shows up in service mode rather than on the display, and Electrolux list it as taking no action, so the machine will often carry on running with the fault stored in memory. It usually turns up when an engineer reads the fault log while chasing a different complaint, such as the drum stalling, a noisy run or drying taking far too long.

What usually causes it

  • Drum turning stiffly or partly jammed, so the motor draws extra current
  • Overloaded drum or a load wedged against the drum
  • Fault in the motor control (inverter) electronics
  • Wiring or connection problem between the control board and motor
  • Failing drum motor

What you can safely check yourself

Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.

  1. Turn the dryer off at the wall for a minute, then switch back on and see whether it runs normally
  2. Clean the door filter and, on heat pump models, the condenser filter
  3. Check nothing is caught around the drum opening or door seal
  4. Try a smaller load — an overpacked drum makes the motor work harder

When to call someone

This one usually needs an engineer once you have tried the checks above. We cover Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire and Leicestershire, and it's £66 including VAT for an engineer to come out and diagnose it — £84 in total if it's repaired on the visit with no parts needed. Any parts needed are quoted on site before we fit them — you decide. Every repair carries a 90-day workmanship guarantee.

Outside our area? The explanation above still stands — take it to a local engineer and tell them the code. Knowing it saves them time and you money.
