What E82 actually means
The dryer can't tell that its programme selector is sitting in the OFF position, so it won't start or run a cycle.
Electrolux dryers check the position of the programme selector against a reference — the OFF/reset position. If the control board never sees that OFF position properly, it can't trust which programme you've chosen and halts the cycle. The knob may look and feel perfectly normal from the outside, which is why owners often assume the problem is elsewhere.
What usually causes it
- A loose or damaged connection between the selector and the control board
- A fault in the selector switch itself
- A failed main control board
- Occasionally a knob that has been knocked or pulled and is no longer seated on its shaft correctly
What you can safely check yourself
Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.
- Turn the selector fully to OFF, switch the dryer off at the wall for a minute, then power it back up and try again — this clears the odd one-off reading.
- If the knob is a push-in type, check it is pushed fully home and turns with the usual clicks rather than spinning freely.
When to call someone
This one usually needs an engineer once you have tried the checks above. We cover Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire and Leicestershire, and it's £66 including VAT for an engineer to come out and diagnose it — £84 in total if it's repaired on the visit with no parts needed. Any parts needed are quoted on site before we fit them — you decide. Every repair carries a 90-day workmanship guarantee.
Outside our area? The explanation above still stands — take it to a local engineer and tell them the code. Knowing it saves them time and you money.
