What E91 actually means
The dryer's two circuit boards have stopped talking to each other, so the machine cuts the cycle short.
Electrolux dryers use a main electronic board to run the drum, heater and sensors, and a separate control/display board behind the fascia where you select the programme. E91 means the main board sent a message and got no sensible reply from the control panel board. Because the machine can no longer trust what it is being told to do, it stops the cycle rather than carry on blind.
What usually causes it
- A one-off electronic glitch that clears on a power cycle
- A loose or damaged wiring connection between the two boards
- Faulty control/display board behind the programme selector
- Faulty main electronic board
- Boards that don't match each other after a previous repair
What you can safely check yourself
Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.
- Turn the dryer off at the wall socket, leave it for a minute or two, then switch back on and try the programme again — Electrolux's own guidance is that if the code returns after this, it needs an engineer.
- Check the plug is fully home in the socket and you're not running the dryer through a extension lead or adaptor.
When to call someone
This one usually needs an engineer once you have tried the checks above. We cover Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire and Leicestershire, and it's £66 including VAT for an engineer to come out and diagnose it — £84 in total if it's repaired on the visit with no parts needed. Any parts needed are quoted on site before we fit them — you decide. Every repair carries a 90-day workmanship guarantee.
Outside our area? The explanation above still stands — take it to a local engineer and tell them the code. Knowing it saves them time and you money.
