What E83 actually means
The dryer can't work out where the programme selector dial is set, so it won't start the cycle.
The control board reads the position of the programme selector as a code. On E83 that reading doesn't match any valid programme position, so the machine has no idea which cycle you've asked for and stops rather than guessing. It's a control/selector fault, not a drum, heater or sensor problem — the documents point to the selector wiring or the board itself.
What usually causes it
- A loose or damaged connection between the selector and the control board
- A worn or faulty programme selector
- A fault on the main control board
- Moisture or damp getting into the control area
What you can safely check yourself
Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.
- Turn the dial fully to OFF, switch off at the wall for a minute, then switch back on and reselect your programme
- Turn the dial slowly through its positions rather than snapping it round, and see whether one particular setting brings the fault back
- Make sure nothing has caught behind or against the dial that stops it seating properly
When to call someone
This one usually needs an engineer once you have tried the checks above. We cover Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire and Leicestershire, and it's £66 including VAT for an engineer to come out and diagnose it — £84 in total if it's repaired on the visit with no parts needed. Any parts needed are quoted on site before we fit them — you decide. Every repair carries a 90-day workmanship guarantee.
Outside our area? The explanation above still stands — take it to a local engineer and tell them the code. Knowing it saves them time and you money.
