Haden E03 washer dryer: what it means & what to check

What E03 actually means

The machine has tried to pump the water out and the level hasn't dropped in the time allowed, so it has stopped with water still in the drum.

On the HW9140W the control board watches the water level while the drain pump runs. If the level doesn't fall far enough within the expected time, it assumes the water isn't going anywhere and halts the cycle rather than carrying on to spin. You'll usually find the drum still holding water and the door locked, because it won't release with water inside.

What E03 looks like on a Haden washer dryer

What usually causes it

Blocked pump filter at the bottom front of the machine — trapped coins, hair grips, fluff or a sock
Drain hose kinked, crushed behind the machine or pushed too far into the standpipe
Blockage in the sink trap or standpipe the hose empties into
Failed or jammed drain pump (something wound round the impeller)
Water level sensor or its wiring reading the drum as still full when it isn't

What you can safely check yourself

Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.

Turn the machine off at the wall, put a shallow tray and towels down and empty the pump filter behind the flap at the bottom front — expect a fair amount of water and check for coins, buttons or fluff
Pull the machine forward gently and make sure the drain hose isn't kinked, trapped or squashed against the wall
If the hose goes into a sink waste or standpipe, check that isn't blocked — pour water down it and see that it clears freely
Check the hose end isn't shoved so deep into the standpipe that it's sealed or siphoning
Leave it off at the wall for a minute, then run a short spin or drain programme to see if it clears
If you've used a lot of detergent, run a rinse and spin — heavy foam can stop the pump shifting water properly
