What E05 actually means

The machine has stopped because the drum motor isn't running, or isn't reporting back that it's running.

On these Haden washer dryers, E05 is the motor fault. The control board asks for drum rotation, doesn't get the feedback it expects — or gets no movement at all — and shuts the cycle down rather than carrying on. Typically the owner sees a drum full of water that never tumbles or spins, and the programme halting early.

What E05 looks like on a Haden washer dryer

Most people find this page having searched for what the machine is doing rather than the code itself. On a Haden washer dryer, E05 usually shows up as one or more of these:

  • Machine door won't open
  • Door won't lock or click shut
  • Door lock light flashing
  • Door stuck shut with the load inside
  • Won't start even with the door closed
  • Drum not turning
  • Won't spin
  • Hums or buzzes but nothing moves

Recognise any of those? That is this fault, and the rest of this page explains what causes it and what you can check yourself.

What usually causes it

  • Worn motor brushes or a failing drum motor
  • A fault on the main control board's motor drive section
  • A loose or corroded plug on the motor wiring
  • A failed tachometer / speed sensor on the motor, so rotation isn't detected
  • Something jamming the drum, such as a coin or wire from a bra between drum and tub

What you can safely check yourself

Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.

  1. Turn the machine off at the wall for a minute, then back on and restart a short programme — an occasional one-off trip can clear.
  2. Open the door and turn the drum by hand. It should spin freely and quietly. If it's stiff, grinding or won't move, don't run it again.
  3. Take some washing out if you've packed it in tightly and try again — an overloaded, badly balanced drum can bring on a motor fault.
  4. Have a listen when it tries to start: a hum with no movement, or a burning smell, both mean stop and call someone.

Which Haden models show E05

E05 means the same thing on all 2 of these models. If yours is not listed, the explanation above still applies — the code is set by the control board, not the model number.
