What E14 actually means
The machine isn't heating the water, so it has stopped the wash rather than carry on cold.
During the wash the control board watches the temperature sensor to confirm the water is warming up at the expected rate. If it sees no rise, it flags E14 and halts. Nine times out of ten the heating element itself has failed, though the temperature sensor (NTC probe) or its wiring can give the same reading.
What usually causes it
- Burnt-out water heating element
- Faulty temperature sensor (NTC probe)
- Damaged or corroded wiring to the element or sensor
- Heavy limescale on the element in hard-water areas
- Control board fault reading the sensor incorrectly
What you can safely check yourself
Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.
- Turn the machine off at the wall for a minute, then restart to rule out a one-off glitch
- Try a different wash programme — if a cold wash runs through fine, that points at the heating side and is useful information for the engineer
