Stop using it for now. Carrying on with this fault risks further damage or a leak. Switch it off at the wall until it has been looked at.

What E22 actually means

The machine can't heat the water properly, so it stops rather than carry on with a wash it can't complete.

On Hoover washers the control board (Candy/Hoover call it the "Cuore" power card) watches the heating element and expects the water temperature to climb once heating starts. If that doesn't happen — or the board can't drive the heater at all — it halts the cycle and shows this code. You'll usually see it partway into a warm or hot wash, with the drum full of water that never gets warm.

What E22 looks like on a Hoover washing machine

Most people find this page having searched for what the machine is doing rather than the code itself. On a Hoover washing machine, E22 usually shows up as one or more of these:

  • Not heating the water
  • Washing coming out cold
  • Cycle takes far longer than it should
  • Leaking
  • Water on the floor
  • Puddle underneath
  • Shuts itself down and won't restart
  • No function at all

Recognise any of those? That is this fault, and the rest of this page explains what causes it and what you can check yourself.

What usually causes it

  • Failed heating element in the bottom of the drum
  • A broken or corroded connection to the heater, often from a past leak
  • Faulty temperature sensing, so the board never sees the water warm up
  • A failed heater relay on the Cuore control board

What you can safely check yourself

Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.

  1. Switch off at the wall for a minute, then power up and try again — a one-off glitch will clear
  2. Run a cold wash (a 20°C or cold rinse) — if that completes normally, it points firmly at the heating side rather than anything else
  3. Note which programmes fail, as it helps whoever attends

What does E22 mean on a Hoover washing machine?

Can I fix Hoover E22 myself?

There are 3 checks you can safely do yourself first.

  1. Switch off at the wall for a minute, then power up and try again — a one-off glitch will clear.
  2. Run a cold wash (a 20°C or cold rinse) — if that completes normally, it points firmly at the heating side rather than anything else.
  3. Note which programmes fail, as it helps whoever attends.
