Hoover E05 washing machine: what it means & what to check

Stop using it for now. Carrying on with this fault risks further damage or a leak. Switch it off at the wall until it has been looked at.

What E05 actually means

The machine can't get a sensible reading from the sensor that measures the water temperature, so it won't run the wash.

Hoover washers use an NTC probe sitting in the tub to tell the control board how hot the water is. If that reading comes back as an open or short circuit — or the wiring to it is damaged — the board has no safe way to control the heater, so it halts and shows E05. It often appears early in a cycle, or as soon as the machine would normally start heating.

What E05 looks like on a Hoover washing machine

Most people find this page having searched for what the machine is doing rather than the code itself. On a Hoover washing machine, E05 usually shows up as one or more of these:

Not heating the water
Washing coming out cold
Cycle takes far longer than it should
No function at all
Dead — nothing lights up
Lights flashing and nothing happening

What usually causes it

Faulty NTC temperature sensor in the tub
Corroded or loose connection at the sensor
Damaged or chafed wiring between sensor and control board
Water ingress or limescale damage around the sensor
Less commonly, a fault on the main control board

What you can safely check yourself

Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.
