What E01 actually means

The machine can't confirm the door is locked shut, so it refuses to start the cycle.

On Hoover (and Candy) machines, E01 points at the door safety lock — the interlock that has to click and confirm before water goes in. The control board waits for that confirmation signal; if it doesn't arrive, or the wiring to the lock is broken, the cycle stops dead, usually within the first few seconds. The same code also covers the drum braking device on some models.

What usually causes it

  • Worn or failed door interlock that no longer latches properly
  • Laundry or a sock trapped in the door seal stopping the door pulling fully shut
  • Door handle or catch mechanism worn so the hook doesn't engage
  • Broken or chafed wiring to the door lock
  • Faulty drum braking device on models fitted with one

What you can safely check yourself

Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.

  1. Open the door and close it again firmly — listen for the click of the lock
  2. Check nothing is caught between the door and the seal
  3. Turn the machine off at the wall for a minute, then power up and try a short cycle
  4. Check the door isn't fouling on a full drum of washing

When to call someone

This one usually needs an engineer once you have tried the checks above. We cover Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire and Leicestershire, and it's £66 including VAT for an engineer to come out and diagnose it — £84 in total if it's repaired on the visit with no parts needed. Any parts needed are quoted on site before we fit them — you decide. Every repair carries a 90-day workmanship guarantee.

Outside our area? The explanation above still stands — take it to a local engineer and tell them the code. Knowing it saves them time and you money.
