Stop using it for now. Carrying on with this fault risks further damage or a leak. Switch it off at the wall until it has been looked at.

What F06 actually means

The machine can't confirm the door is locked, so it refuses to start een shlocked shut with water inside.

On Hotpoint washing machines F06 points to the door lock circuit. The control board sends power to the interlock and waits for confirmation the door is latched; if that confirmation never arrives the cycle won't begin, and if the fault appears mid-wash the door stays locked with water still in the drum. You'll usually see either a machine that won't respond to Start, or one that has stopped and won't release the door.

What usually causes it

  • Faulty door interlock the most common cause by far
  • Door not fully latched laundry or the seal fouling the catch
  • Worn or dropped door hinge stopping the catch engaging squarely
  • Damaged wiring or a loose connection to the interlock
  • Control board fault sending or reading the lock signal incorrectly

What you can safely check yourself

Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.

  1. Take everything out of the way of the door and close it firmly listen for the catch clicking home.
  2. Check nothing (a sock, the rubber seal folded over) is trapped between door and drum.
  3. Turn the machine off at the wall for a minute, then back on and try a short cycle this clears the odd one-off lock error.
  4. Look at whether the door sits square when closed, or has dropped slightly on its hinge.

When to call someone

Outside our area? The explanation above still stands — take it to a local engineer and tell them the code. Knowing it saves them time and you money.
