Stop using it for now. Carrying on with this fault risks further damage or a leak. Switch it off at the wall until it has been looked at.

What F12 actually means

The main control board and the display/control panel have stopped talking to each other, so the machine won't start.

On Hotpoint machines F12 is an electronic control fault — a communication failure between the main circuit board and the user interface board that carries the buttons and display. Because the machine can't confirm what you've selected, it refuses to begin the cycle, and often it looks dead or half-awake rather than showing an obvious mechanical problem. It's not a fault with the drum, pump or heater.

What usually causes it

  • A loose or corroded connector between the control board and the display panel
  • A failed main control board
  • A failed display/user interface board
  • Damp or a moisture-related short around the control area
  • A mains supply glitch or power surge that has upset the board

What you can safely check yourself

Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.

  1. Turn the machine off at the wall socket, leave it for a minute, then switch back on — this clears the odd one-off glitch
  2. Check the plug and socket are sound and the machine isn't running through a damaged extension lead
  3. Make sure the machine isn't standing damp after a leak or a spill on the control panel

When to call someone

This one usually needs an engineer once you have tried the checks above. We cover Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire and Leicestershire, and it's £66 including VAT for an engineer to come out and diagnose it — £84 in total if it's repaired on the visit with no parts needed. Any parts needed are quoted on site before we fit them — you decide. Every repair carries a 90-day workmanship guarantee.

Outside our area? The explanation above still stands — take it to a local engineer and tell them the code. Knowing it saves them time and you money.
