What F17 actually means
The machine can't confirm the door is locked shut, so it won't start or won't release the door.
Before any water goes in, the control board checks the door interlock has latched. If it doesn't get that confirmation, F17 appears and the cycle stops. On these Hotpoint and Indesit machines it's usually the interlock itself that has failed rather than anything the owner is doing wrong.
What usually causes it
- Door not pushed shut hard enough to click
- Failed door interlock (the most common cause by far)
- Damaged or burnt wiring connector at the door lock
- Laundry or the door seal fouling the catch
- Control board not reading the lock signal
What you can safely check yourself
Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.
- Push the door firmly closed at the handle side — around the 3 o'clock position — until you hear it latch, then restart.
- Check nothing is trapped in the door seal or poking out of the drum.
- Turn the machine off at the wall for a minute, then back on and try the programme again.
- Look up your model on Whirlpool's recall checker (washingmachinerecall.whirlpool.co.uk) — a large number of Hotpoint, Indesit, Creda and Ariston machines were recalled over door lock and wiring faults that were a fire risk.
