What F04 actually means

The machine hasn't managed to pump the water out in the time it expects, so it's stopped with the drum still full.

On Hotpoint washing machines F04 (and F05) means a drain timeout — the control board ran the drain pump but the water level didn't drop within the allotted period. You'll usually find the cycle frozen partway through, water sitting in the drum and the door locked shut until it drains.

What F04 looks like on a Hotpoint washing machine

Most people find this page having searched for what the machine is doing rather than the code itself. On a Hotpoint washing machine, F04 usually shows up as one or more of these:

  • Machine door won't open
  • Door won't lock or click shut
  • Door lock light flashing
  • Door stuck shut with the load inside
  • Won't start even with the door closed
  • Machine not draining
  • Water left in the drum at the end of the cycle
  • Stops mid-cycle full of water

Recognise any of those? That is this fault, and the rest of this page explains what causes it and what you can check yourself.

What usually causes it

  • Blocked or restricted waste pipe or sink standpipe
  • Debris, coins or fluff caught in the pump filter or pump housing
  • Kinked or trapped drain hose behind the machine
  • Blocked sump hose between drum and pump
  • Worn or seized drain pump

What you can safely check yourself

Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.

  1. Turn the machine off at the wall for a couple of minutes, then switch back on and try a spin or drain programme.
  2. Pull the drain hose out from behind the machine and check it isn't kinked, crushed or pushed too far down into the standpipe.
  3. Clean the pump filter at the front bottom of the machine — have a shallow tray and towels ready, as the drum water will come out.
  4. If the hose runs into a sink waste, check that waste isn't slow-draining or blocked with grease.

Can I fix Hotpoint F04 myself?

There are 4 checks you can safely do yourself first.

This sometimes clears with those checks. If it comes back, it needs looking at properly.
