What F09 actually means
The machine's control board has lost or mismatched its software settings, so it can't run a programme.
F09 on a Hotpoint washer means a setup or software error on the main control board \u2014 on older EVO1 boards it's described as an incompatible EEPROM, meaning the memory chip holding the machine's configuration doesn't match the board or model. The usual symptom is a machine that won't let you select or start a programme, often with several lights flashing or the display behaving oddly. It stops because without valid settings it has no idea what wash to run or at what speed.
What usually causes it
- Corrupted settings in the control board's memory
- A replacement control board fitted without being programmed for the model
- Memory chip on the board failed
- Power surge or interrupted supply scrambling the stored configuration
What you can safely check yourself
Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.
- Turn the machine off at the wall socket, leave it a minute or two, then switch back on \u2014 occasionally that clears a one-off glitch
- Try selecting a different programme after the power cycle to see whether anything is accepted
When to call someone
This one usually needs an engineer once you have tried the checks above. We cover Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire and Leicestershire, and it's £66 including VAT for an engineer to come out and diagnose it — £84 in total if it's repaired on the visit with no parts needed. Any parts needed are quoted on site before we fit them — you decide. Every repair carries a 90-day workmanship guarantee.
Outside our area? The explanation above still stands — take it to a local engineer and tell them the code. Knowing it saves them time and you money.
