What H20 actually means

The machine isn't getting enough water in, so it has halted before the wash can start.

Hotpoint's control board watches how quickly the drum fills at the start of the cycle. If the water level doesn't rise as expected in the time allowed, it stops and shows H20 rather than run the heater or motor with a near-empty drum. You'll usually notice it sitting there with the door locked, drum barely wet, and no water noise.

What usually causes it

  • Water tap behind the machine turned off or only part open
  • Kinked, trapped or crushed fill hose
  • Blocked filter in the inlet hose connection where it meets the tap or the machine
  • Faulty water inlet valve not opening
  • Low mains water pressure, or the anti-flood device in the hose having tripped

What you can safely check yourself

Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.

  1. Check the cold tap feeding the machine is fully open
  2. Pull the machine forward gently and make sure the fill hose isn't kinked or squashed against the wall
  3. Run a nearby cold tap to confirm you have normal water pressure in the house
  4. Turn the machine off at the wall for a minute, then power up and restart a short cycle
  5. If you have more than one hose, check neither has been trapped under a foot or bent sharply

When to call someone

This sometimes clears with the checks above. If it comes back, it needs looking at properly. We cover Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire and Leicestershire, and it's £66 including VAT for an engineer to come out and diagnose it — £84 in total if it's repaired on the visit with no parts needed. Any parts needed are quoted on site before we fit them — you decide. Every repair carries a 90-day workmanship guarantee.

Outside our area? The explanation above still stands — take it to a local engineer and tell them the code. Knowing it saves them time and you money.
