What E00 actually means

The temperature sensor in the freezer section has stopped giving a sensible reading, so the control board can no longer tell how cold the freezer actually is.

The electronics constantly monitor the freezer sensor, and if the reading goes open circuit or short circuit it flags the fault and flashes the code on the freezer display, alternating with the set temperature. Because it has lost its temperature reference, the board falls back on a fixed timed cooling pattern instead — running the compressor to a set on/off schedule rather than to actual temperature. The appliance keeps cooling, but it is guessing, so the freezer may run colder or warmer than the number on the display.

What E00 looks like on a Leisure fridge freezer

Most people find this page having searched for what the machine is doing rather than the code itself. On a Leisure fridge freezer, E00 usually shows up as one or more of these:

  • Not heating the water
  • Washing coming out cold
  • Cycle takes far longer than it should
  • Not cooling
  • Freezer not freezing
  • Ice building up at the back
  • Food going off in the fridge
  • Running constantly and never getting cold

Recognise any of those? That is this fault, and the rest of this page explains what causes it and what you can check yourself.

What usually causes it

  • A failed freezer temperature sensor (the usual finding)
  • A damaged or corroded plug where the sensor connects to the wiring
  • A wiring break in the sensor lead, often where it passes through the cabinet
  • A fault on the electronic control board reading the sensor

What you can safely check yourself

Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.

  1. Switch off at the wall for a minute, then power back up — a brief glitch can occasionally clear, and the error message is deleted automatically once the cause is gone
  2. Check the display is showing the freezer's set temperature alternating with the code, and note whether food is actually still frozen — useful for the engineer
  3. Make sure the doors are closing properly and nothing is holding a seal open, so you can rule out a simple temperature problem

Which Leisure models show E00

E00 means the same thing on all 2 of these models. If yours is not listed, the explanation above still applies — the code is set by the control board, not the model number.

Can I fix Leisure E00 myself?

There are 3 checks you can safely do yourself first.

  1. Switch off at the wall for a minute, then power back up — a brief glitch can occasionally clear, and the error message is deleted automatically once the cause is gone.
  2. Check the display is showing the freezer's set temperature alternating with the code, and note whether food is actually still frozen — useful for the engineer.
  3. Make sure the doors are closing properly and nothing is holding a seal open, so you can rule out a simple temperature problem.

This one usually needs an engineer once you have tried them.

Tried the checks and it's still showing E00?

This one usually needs an engineer once you have tried the checks above. Then it wants someone who can open it up.
