What E09 actually means

The fridge freezer can't detect its automatic ice maker, so it has flagged an ice maker fault — everything else carries on working.

The control board looks for a switch that tells it the Icematic ice maker is present and running. When that signal doesn't arrive, it puts E9 up on the freezer display, alternating with your set temperature, and lights the warning "!" symbol. Cooling and freezing are unaffected — it is the ice-making function alone that has dropped out.

What E09 looks like on a Leisure fridge freezer

Most people find this page having searched for what the machine is doing rather than the code itself. On a Leisure fridge freezer, E09 usually shows up as one or more of these:

  • Not cooling
  • Freezer not freezing
  • Ice building up at the back
  • Food going off in the fridge
  • Running constantly and never getting cold
  • No function at all
  • Dead — nothing lights up
  • Lights flashing and nothing happening

Recognise any of those? That is this fault, and the rest of this page explains what causes it and what you can check yourself.

What usually causes it

  • Ice maker not seated properly in its housing after cleaning or defrosting
  • Faulty or unresponsive Icematic switch
  • Wiring or connector fault between the ice maker and the control board
  • Control board not reading the ice maker signal

What you can safely check yourself

Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.

  1. Press Ice Off on the control panel — the warning will clear, and this confirms the fault is limited to the ice maker
  2. Check the ice maker unit is pushed fully home in its compartment and nothing (a stray ice cube or packaging) is holding it out of position
  3. Turn the appliance off at the socket for a minute, then back on, and select ice again to see whether the code returns

Which Leisure models show E09

E09 means the same thing on this model. If yours is not listed, the explanation above still applies — the code is set by the control board, not the model number.

Common questions about Leisure E09

What does E09 mean on a Leisure fridge freezer?

The fridge freezer can't detect its automatic ice maker, so it has flagged an ice maker fault — everything else carries on working. The control board looks for a switch that tells it the Icematic ice maker is present and running. Can I fix Leisure E09 myself?

There are 3 checks you can safely do yourself first.

  1. Press Ice Off on the control panel — the warning will clear, and this confirms the fault is limited to the ice maker.
  2. Check the ice maker unit is pushed fully home in its compartment and nothing (a stray ice cube or packaging) is holding it out of position.
  3. Turn the appliance off at the socket for a minute, then back on, and select ice again to see whether the code returns.

This sometimes clears with those checks. If it comes back, it needs looking at properly.
