What E04 actually means
The sensor that tells the fridge freezer when the frost on its internal cooling coil has melted has stopped giving a sensible reading.
This side-by-side runs an automatic defrost cycle to clear frost off the evaporator behind the freezer's back wall, and a dedicated defrost sensor tells the control board when that coil has warmed enough to stop. When the board sees a reading from that sensor that is out of range or absent altogether, it flags the fault in the freezer temperature part of the display. Cooling itself often carries on for a while, so the first thing many owners notice is the code rather than warm food.
What E04 looks like on a Teknix fridge freezer
Most people find this page having searched for what the machine is doing rather than the code itself. On a Teknix fridge freezer, E04 usually shows up as one or more of these:
- Overfilling, or won't stop filling
- Stops with water still inside
- Fills and drains over and over
- Not cooling
- Freezer not freezing
- Ice building up at the back
- Food going off in the fridge
- Running constantly and never getting cold
Recognise any of those? That is this fault, and the rest of this page explains what causes it and what you can check yourself.
What usually causes it
- The defrost sensor itself has failed or drifted out of range
- A loose or corroded plug on the sensor's wiring behind the freezer liner
- Moisture or ice damage around the sensor where it clips to the cooling coil
- A fault on the main control board reading the sensor
What you can safely check yourself
Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.
- Switch the appliance off at the socket for a minute and back on — a genuine sensor failure will bring the code straight back, but an occasional glitch clears
- Note whether the freezer is still holding temperature and whether heavy frost or ice is building up on the back wall inside the freezer, as that tells the engineer how far it has gone
- Check the doors are closing fully and the seals are not held open by an overfilled drawer, as constant warm, damp air makes frosting far worse
Which Teknix models show E04
E04 means the same thing on this model. If yours is not listed, the explanation above still applies — the code is set by the control board, not the model number.

Can I fix Teknix E04 myself?
There are 3 checks you can safely do yourself first.
- Switch the appliance off at the socket for a minute and back on — a genuine sensor failure will bring the code straight back, but an occasional glitch clears.
- Note whether the freezer is still holding temperature and whether heavy frost or ice is building up on the back wall inside the freezer, as that tells the engineer how far it has gone.
- Check the doors are closing fully and the seals are not held open by an overfilled drawer, as constant warm, damp air makes frosting far worse.
This one usually needs an engineer once you have tried them.
How much does it cost to repair Teknix E04?
£66 including VAT for an engineer to come out and diagnose it, or £84 in total including VAT if it is put right on the visit and no parts are needed. Any parts needed are quoted on site before we fit them — you decide. Every repair carries a 90-day workmanship guarantee.
Tried the checks and it's still showing E04?
This one usually needs an engineer once you have tried the checks above. Then it wants someone who can open it up.
What it costs, before you call: the price is the same whatever the fault turns out to be — £66 including VAT for an engineer to come out and diagnose it, or £84 in total including VAT if it is put right on the visit and no parts are needed. Any parts needed are quoted on site before we fit them — you decide. Every repair carries a 90-day workmanship guarantee.

Outside our area? The explanation above still stands — take it to a local engineer and tell them the code. Knowing it saves them time and you money.
