What C03 actually means

C03 isn't a breakdown code — it's one stage of the machine's built-in service test, the part that runs the pumps.

On Whirlpool Zen-type machines the C codes are steps in the engineer's diagnostic test mode, not faults. C03 is the pump test: it runs the recirculation pump (the one that sprays water back over the load), then switches over to the main drain pump to empty the machine, and afterwards reports any related fault codes it found — drainage and sensor codes such as F03, F06, F07, F15, F26 and F27. If you're seeing C03 on the display, the machine has been put into test mode rather than having failed mid-wash.

What C03 looks like on a Whirlpool washing machine

Water left in the drum at the end of the cycle
Stops mid-cycle full of water

What usually causes it

Test mode entered accidentally when turning the dial or holding buttons at switch-on
An engineer or previous owner left the machine in diagnostic mode
The test was started deliberately to check a drainage or pump complaint
Water left in the drum because the test was interrupted before the drain stage finished

What you can safely check yourself

Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.

Turn the machine off at the wall for a minute, then switch back on and select a normal programme — that usually clears test mode
Clean the pump filter at the front of the machine, particularly if the drum still has water in it
Check the drain hose isn't kinked, trapped behind the machine or pushed too far down the standpipe
Run a short rinse and spin and watch whether the water empties normally
