AEG E54 tumble dryer: what it means & what to check

What E54 actually means

The dryer has tried several times to get the drum turning and failed, so it has paused the cycle.

The control board sends power to the drum motor, then checks that it has actually started. On E54 that confirmation never arrives, so after a few attempts it gives up and pauses rather than keep feeding power to a motor that isn't moving. Typically you'll see the cycle stop early with the load still wet, sometimes with a hum from the machine but no drum movement.

What E54 looks like on a AEG tumble dryer

Most people find this page having searched for what the machine is doing rather than the code itself. On a AEG tumble dryer, E54 usually shows up as one or more of these:

Drum not turning
Won't spin
Hums or buzzes but nothing moves
Turns one way only

What usually causes it

Drum packed too full, so the motor can't get it moving
A worn or snapped drive belt leaving the motor spinning nothing
Motor start capacitor failed — usually the cause when you hear a hum but nothing turns
Low or unstable mains voltage at the socket
Seized motor, bearings or drum supports
Faulty wiring to the motor, or the control board itself

What you can safely check yourself

Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.

Turn the dryer off at the wall for a minute, then restart — if the fault was a one-off overload it may clear
Take out roughly half the load and restart with a smaller batch
With the machine switched off and unplugged, turn the drum round by hand — it should move freely and evenly, not feel stiff or grinding
Clean the lint filter and, if fitted, the condenser filter, so the drum isn't fighting a blocked airflow
Plug the dryer straight into a wall socket rather than an extension lead or adaptor
