AEG E66 tumble dryer: what it means & what to check

What E66 actually means

The fan that blows air through the drum has overheated, and its built-in thermal cut-out has tripped to protect it.

AEG dryers on the Env06 control board watch the fan motor's own thermal protector. When that protector opens, the board stops the cycle and logs E66 — on machines without a display you'll see it as six green flashes followed by six red ones. It's a protective stop, not a random glitch: either the motor genuinely got too hot, or the board has lost the signal from it because of a wiring or drive fault.

What E66 looks like on a AEG tumble dryer

What usually causes it

Fan motor overheating because it's stiff, worn or seized
Loose or disconnected wiring to the fan motor
Fault in the board's motor drive circuit (triac)
Restricted airflow making the motor work harder than it should
Faulty control board misreading the motor's thermal protector

What you can safely check yourself

Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.

Turn the dryer off at the wall for a minute, then switch back on and restart — if the motor has cooled, the protector may reset and let you see whether it recurs
Clean the lint filter in the door and, on condenser models, rinse the condenser filter behind the flap at the bottom
Check the vent hose isn't kinked, crushed behind the machine or blocked (vented models)
Give the machine space at the back and don't run it in a cupboard with the door shut
Run a smaller load and see if the fault comes back at the same point
