What E97 actually means

The dryer's control board has lost track of which programme the selector dial is actually asking for, so it abandons the cycle rather than run the wrong one.

Inside the machine, the position of the programme selector has to match a list of cycles held in the control board's memory. When AEG's diagnostics find a mismatch between the two — the dial is calling for a programme the board doesn't recognise as valid for that model — it flags E97 and interrupts the cycle. It is recorded as a configuration error rather than a mechanical or airflow problem, so nothing in the drum, filters or ducting is at fault here.

What E97 looks like on a AEG tumble dryer

Most people find this page having searched for what the machine is doing rather than the code itself. On a AEG tumble dryer, E97 usually shows up as one or more of these:

  • Not drying properly
  • Takes hours to dry a load
  • Getting hot but the clothes stay damp
  • No function at all
  • Dead — nothing lights up
  • Lights flashing and nothing happening
  • Programme won't start
  • Machine tripping the electrics

Recognise any of those? That is this fault, and the rest of this page explains what causes it and what you can check yourself.

What usually causes it

  • Incorrect configuration data stored in the control board's memory
  • A replacement control board fitted without being set up for the model
  • A software or memory corruption on the board after a power interruption
  • A faulty programme selector sending positions the board cannot match

What you can safely check yourself

Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.

  1. Turn the dryer off at the wall for a minute, then switch it back on and select the programme again — a one-off glitch will sometimes clear
  2. Set the selector deliberately to a single, definite programme position rather than leaving it between two settings, and see whether the fault still appears

Can I fix AEG E97 myself?

There are 2 checks you can safely do yourself first.

  1. Turn the dryer off at the wall for a minute, then switch it back on and select the programme again — a one-off glitch will sometimes clear.
  2. Set the selector deliberately to a single, definite programme position rather than leaving it between two settings, and see whether the fault still appears.
