AEG E51 tumble dryer: what it means & what to check

What E51 actually means

The dryer has shut the cycle down because the electronic switch that feeds power to the drum motor has failed short-circuit — the board can no longer control the motor properly.

On these AEG dryers the control board switches the motor through a component called a triac, and E51 means the board has detected that switch stuck closed or shorted. Because the board can't safely turn the motor on and off, it stops the programme rather than run on. E51 is also generated after a repeated motor overheat fault (E52) that keeps returning over roughly half an hour of retries, so a jammed or straining motor can end up showing E51 in the end.

What E51 looks like on a AEG tumble dryer

Door won't lock or click shut
Door lock light flashing
Door stuck shut with the load inside

What usually causes it

A failed triac or other damage on the control board
A faulty drum motor, or a motor that has been overheating and cutting out
Damaged or loose wiring between the board and the motor
A failing motor capacitor — often heard as a humming noise with no drum movement
Something jamming the drum or a very heavy, tightly packed load making the motor strain

What you can safely check yourself

Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.

Turn the dryer off at the wall for a minute, then switch back on and try a short programme — if it was a one-off the code may clear.
Open the door and turn the drum by hand to check nothing is trapped or catching, and that a stray sock or similar hasn't got past the drum edge.
Clean the door filter and the condenser filter, and check the vent hose (if fitted) isn't kinked — a blocked airflow makes the motor and cut-out work harder.
Dry a smaller load; overloading can be enough to stop the motor turning.
Listen when you press start: a hum with no drum rotation is worth mentioning to the engineer, as it points at the capacitor or motor rather than the board.
