AEG E53 tumble dryer: what it means & what to check

What E53 actually means

The dryer's main control board can no longer read what the drum motor is doing, so it has shut the cycle down.

The board switches the motor on and off through a component called a triac, and it monitors that circuit to confirm the motor is actually being powered. On E53 that monitoring — the "sensing" side of the triac circuit — has failed, so the board can't verify the motor supply and stops the programme rather than run blind. The fault points at one thing here: the electronic control board itself. On the older ENV06 boards this family of faults also shows as five green flashes followed by red flashes rather than a code on the display.

What E53 looks like on a AEG tumble dryer

What usually causes it

A failed motor triac sensing circuit on the main control board — the cause AEG lists for this code
A board damaged by an earlier motor or heater fault that was left running
Moisture or fluff contamination inside the control housing affecting the board
A mains surge or spike having taken out the switching side of the board

What you can safely check yourself

Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.
