AEG E52 tumble dryer: what it means & what to check

What E52 actually means

The safety cut-out built into the drum motor has got too hot and tripped, so the dryer has shut the heater off and stopped reversing the drum.

AEG dryers using the ENV06 control board watch a thermal cut-out fitted to the motor. When it trips, the board pulls power from the heater and stops the drum changing direction, then waits — if the motor cools and the cut-out resets, the code is logged and the cycle carries on. If it keeps tripping over roughly 35 minutes of trying, the board gives up and throws E51 instead. On some panels the E5-family faults show as five green flashes followed by red flashes rather than the code itself.

What E52 looks like on a AEG tumble dryer

What usually causes it

Motor struggling or failing, so it runs hot and trips its own cut-out
Restricted airflow — blocked lint filter, clogged condenser or a kinked vent hose — making the motor work harder
A failing motor start capacitor (you'll usually hear a hum with the drum barely turning or not turning at all)
Damaged or loose wiring between the motor, cut-out and control board
Faulty control board misreading or mishandling the motor circuit

What you can safely check yourself

Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.

Turn the dryer off at the wall and leave it 30 minutes to let the motor cool right down, then try a short cycle
Clean the lint filter in the door and, on condenser models, rinse out the condenser filter
Check the vent hose (on vented models) isn't kinked, crushed behind the machine or blocked with fluff
Make sure there's a clear air gap around and behind the dryer so it isn't recirculating its own hot air
Try a smaller load — a heavily packed drum makes the motor work harder
