What E82 actually means

The dryer can no longer tell where the programme dial is set — the control board is reading the dial as being in the OFF position when it shouldn't be.

AEG dryers read the position of the programme selector electrically and feed that back to the main control board. E82 is raised when the board gets an invalid or contradictory reading for the OFF position, so it doesn't know which cycle you've asked for and won't start one. You'll usually see it as a dryer that lights up but refuses to run whatever you turn the dial to, or one that drops out as soon as you select a programme.

What E82 looks like on a AEG tumble dryer

Most people find this page having searched for what the machine is doing rather than the code itself. On a AEG tumble dryer, E82 usually shows up as one or more of these:

  • Leaking
  • Water on the floor
  • Puddle underneath
  • Shuts itself down and won't restart
  • No function at all
  • Dead — nothing lights up
  • Lights flashing and nothing happening
  • Programme won't start

Recognise any of those? That is this fault, and the rest of this page explains what causes it and what you can check yourself.

What usually causes it

  • A loose or damaged connection between the selector dial and the main control board
  • A worn or faulty programme selector
  • A fault on the main electronic control board itself
  • Damp or corrosion in the control area after a leak or a very humid room

What you can safely check yourself

Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.

  1. Turn the dryer off at the wall for a minute, then power it back up and try selecting a programme again — an occasional one-off reading fault can clear.
  2. Turn the dial firmly and deliberately to a clear programme position rather than leaving it between settings.
  3. If the dryer has been moved or knocked recently, check nothing is pressing against the control panel or dial.

Common questions about AEG E82

What does E82 mean on a AEG tumble dryer?

The dryer can no longer tell where the programme dial is set — the control board is reading the dial as being in the OFF position when it shouldn't be. AEG dryers read the position of the programme selector electrically and feed that back to the main control board. Can I fix AEG E82 myself?

There are 3 checks you can safely do yourself first.
