What E23 actually means
The display board is running software the machine doesn't recognise as the correct version, so the control system refuses to carry on.
E23 is a wrong LCD software fault — the programme board has checked the software on the display/control panel and found it isn't the version it expects to be talking to. Because the two boards can't agree, the machine stops rather than running a cycle blind. It is a control-electronics fault, not anything to do with heating, drum or drainage, so you won't find a blockage or a filter behind it.
What E23 looks like on a Altimo tumble dryer
Most people find this page having searched for what the machine is doing rather than the code itself. On a Altimo tumble dryer, E23 usually shows up as one or more of these:
- Machine not draining
- Water left in the drum at the end of the cycle
- Stops mid-cycle full of water
- Standing water in the bottom
- Not drying
- Blowing cold air
- Clothes still damp at the end
- Takes hours to dry
Recognise any of those? That is this fault, and the rest of this page explains what causes it and what you can check yourself.
What usually causes it
- The display board has been fitted or replaced with the wrong software version for the machine
- Corrupted software on the display board after a power interruption or supply spike
- A faulty display/LCD board that no longer reports its version correctly
- A poor connection between the display board and the main programme board
What you can safely check yourself
Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.
- Turn the programme knob to the off position and leave it there for a few seconds — the manual's own reset — then select a programme again
- Switch the machine off at the wall socket for a minute, then back on, and see whether the code clears
- If the code returns straight away every time, stop there — there is nothing further an owner can do on this one
Which Altimo models show E23
E23 means the same thing on all 4 of these models. If yours is not listed, the explanation above still applies — the code is set by the control board, not the model number.
