What E50 actually means
The machine is reporting that the software loaded on its display/control board isn't the right one for it, so it won't run the cycle.
E50 sits in the software group of faults, alongside E51 — these are raised when the control board finds a software mismatch rather than a mechanical or water problem. On these washer-dryers the display board and the main board have to be running matching, model-correct firmware; when they don't agree, the machine flags the error and refuses to start or abandons the programme. Nothing has failed in the drum, heater or pump, which is why there's no leak, no noise and no obvious symptom other than the code itself.
What E50 looks like on a Altimo tumble dryer
Most people find this page having searched for what the machine is doing rather than the code itself. On a Altimo tumble dryer, E50 usually shows up as one or more of these:
- Not drying
- Blowing cold air
- Clothes still damp at the end
- Takes hours to dry
- Leaking
- Water on the floor
- Puddle underneath
- Shuts itself down and won't restart
Recognise any of those? That is this fault, and the rest of this page explains what causes it and what you can check yourself.
What usually causes it
- Wrong or mismatched software on the display board — usually after a board has been changed
- A replacement control or display board fitted that wasn't programmed for this model
- A corrupted software load on the control electronics
- A fault on the display board itself, so it can't report its software correctly
What you can safely check yourself
Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.
- Turn the programme knob to the off position and leave it there for about three seconds, then set your programme again — this is the standard reset
- Switch off at the wall for a minute and back on, then retry a cycle
- If it clears and then comes straight back on the next load, note that down for the engineer — a code that returns immediately points at the boards rather than a one-off glitch
Which Altimo models show E50
E50 means the same thing on all 4 of these models. If yours is not listed, the explanation above still applies — the code is set by the control board, not the model number.
