Blomberg E12 washing machine: what it means & what to check

What E12 actually means

The machine has found water where it shouldn't be — the level has risen to the point the anti-flood (aquastop) safety trips, so it has shut the wash down.

Blomberg's control board watches the water level sensor, and if the level reaches the aquastop threshold it treats it as an overfill or leak and stops everything rather than carry on filling. The fault is blunt about this one: E12 is a water leakage safety error and service should be called. You'll usually see it part-way through filling, often with the display beeping three times, and the machine won't let you restart the programme normally.

What E12 looks like on a Blomberg washing machine

What usually causes it

Water leaking inside the machine and collecting where the aquastop can detect it
A faulty or blocked water level (pressure) sensor giving a false high reading
A water valve letting water through when it shouldn't, so the drum keeps filling
A drainage problem leaving the machine over-full at the start of the cycle

What you can safely check yourself

Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.

Turn the machine off at the wall and turn the water tap off — that stops any further filling while you wait
Look underneath and around the machine for water on the floor, and mop it up so you can see whether it comes back
Check the drain hose isn't kinked, crushed behind the machine or pushed too far down the standpipe
Clean out the pump filter at the front (with the machine off) and make sure it's screwed back in tight
