Stop using it for now. Carrying on with this fault risks further damage or a leak. Switch it off at the wall until it has been looked at.

What E36 actually means

The machine isn't heating the water \u2014 it has run the heater for ten minutes and seen almost no rise in temperature, so it has stopped the wash.

ElectriQ machines watch the water temperature with an NTC sensor while the heating element is switched on. If the heater runs for ten minutes and the temperature has moved by less than 3 degrees, the control board decides the heating circuit isn't doing its job and flags E36. The manufacturer is clear that this one can't be cleared by the owner \u2014 it needs an engineer to find and fix the cause first.

What usually causes it

  • A loose or corroded plug on the heating element or temperature sensor
  • A failed heating element (the usual finding on an older machine)
  • A faulty NTC temperature sensor giving a false reading
  • A fault on the main control board \u2014 the least common of the four

What you can safely check yourself

Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.

  1. Turn the machine off at the wall for a minute, then back on \u2014 if the code returns as soon as heating starts, it's a genuine heating fault
  2. Note whether a cold wash runs through normally; that tells the engineer the fault is confined to the heating circuit

When to call someone

This one usually needs an engineer once you have tried the checks above. We cover Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire and Leicestershire, and it's £66 including VAT for an engineer to come out and diagnose it — £84 in total if it's repaired on the visit with no parts needed. Any parts needed are quoted on site before we fit them — you decide. Every repair carries a 90-day workmanship guarantee.

Outside our area? The explanation above still stands — take it to a local engineer and tell them the code. Knowing it saves them time and you money.
