What E32 actually means

The dryer can't get a sensible reading from the moisture sensor in the drum, so it stops the cycle rather than dry blind.

Electrolux dryers judge how wet your washing is by passing a tiny current through the load via metal contacts in the drum. The signal coming back is too weak (the documents call it 'conductimetric sensor signal frequency too low'), so the control board has no reliable way of knowing when the clothes are dry and interrupts the programme. On these models the reading reaches the board through carbon brushes on the rotating drum, which is where the fault usually lies.

What E32 looks like on a Electrolux tumble dryer

Most people find this page having searched for what the machine is doing rather than the code itself. On a Electrolux tumble dryer, E32 usually shows up as one or more of these:

  • Machine door won't open
  • Door won't lock or click shut
  • Door lock light flashing
  • Door stuck shut with the load inside
  • Won't start even with the door closed
  • Machine not draining
  • Water left in the drum at the end of the cycle
  • Stops mid-cycle full of water

Recognise any of those? That is this fault, and the rest of this page explains what causes it and what you can check yourself.

What usually causes it

  • Worn or sticking drum contact brushes for the moisture sensor
  • Damaged or loose wiring between the sensor and the control board
  • Dirt or fabric-softener film on the drum sensor contacts
  • Faulty main control board (less common)
  • Code triggered by someone stopping the service test dial on the sensor test position

What you can safely check yourself

Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.

  1. Turn the dryer off at the wall for a minute, switch back on and start a fresh cycle — a one-off glitch can clear.
  2. Wipe the inside of the drum with a damp cloth, including the metal sensor strips, if there's a greasy or waxy build-up from softener sheets.
  3. Clean the door filter and, on condenser models, empty the water tank and clean the condenser filter so you're not chasing a separate drying complaint.
