Electrolux E52 tumble dryer: what it means & what to check

What E52 actually means

The dryer's drum motor has got too hot and its built-in safety cut-out has tripped, so the machine has shut off the heater and stopped reversing the drum.

Each drum motor has a thermal cut-out buried in its windings. When that cut-out opens, the control board sees it, drops power to the heater unit and stops the drum reversing rather than pushing on. If the motor cools and the fault doesn't return, the code is stored and the cycle carries on; if it keeps happening over roughly 35 minutes of retries, the board escalates to E51 and the cycle is dead.

What usually causes it

Motor overheating because airflow is blocked by lint in the filters or condenser
A tired drum motor drawing too much current and tripping its own thermal cut-out
A failing start/run capacitor — you'll often hear a hum with no drum movement
Damaged or loose wiring in the motor circuit
Faulty control board misreading the cut-out signal

What you can safely check yourself

Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.

Clean the door filter and any secondary fluff filter thoroughly — restricted airflow makes the motor work harder and run hot
On condenser models, take out the condenser filter block and rinse it if your model allows it, following the handbook
Leave the dryer switched off at the wall for 30 minutes so the motor can cool, then try a short cycle
Don't overload the drum — try a small load and see whether the code returns
Make sure the dryer isn't jammed tight against a wall or in a hot cupboard with no air around it
