What E61 actually means

The dryer isn't getting hot enough within the time it allows, so it pauses the cycle.

On these Electrolux ENV06 control boards, the machine watches how quickly the drum air temperature rises via the NTC temperature sensor. If it hasn't reached the expected heat within the maximum time allowed, it flags E61 and pauses the programme rather than tumbling cold indefinitely. On models where the code isn't shown on the display it appears as six green flashes followed by red flashes, or is only visible in service mode.

What E61 looks like on a Electrolux tumble dryer

Most people find this page having searched for what the machine is doing rather than the code itself. On a Electrolux tumble dryer, E61 usually shows up as one or more of these:

  • Machine door won't open
  • Door won't lock or click shut
  • Door lock light flashing
  • Door stuck shut with the load inside
  • Won't start even with the door closed
  • Machine not draining
  • Water left in the drum at the end of the cycle
  • Stops mid-cycle full of water

Recognise any of those? That is this fault, and the rest of this page explains what causes it and what you can check yourself.

What usually causes it

  • Heater unit failed or partly failed, so the air never warms up
  • Blocked filters or restricted airflow slowing the temperature rise
  • NTC temperature sensor out of position or reading wrongly
  • Damaged or loose wiring to the heater
  • Faulty control board

What you can safely check yourself

Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.

  1. Clean the door filter and the secondary fluff filter thoroughly — matted lint is a common reason heat-up is too slow
  2. On condenser models, remove and rinse the condenser/heat exchanger filter if your model has one and empty the water container
  3. Make sure the vent hose (if fitted) isn't kinked or crushed behind the machine and that the room isn't sealed shut
  4. Turn the dryer off at the wall for a minute, then restart a normal heated cycle and see if the fault returns
