What E64 actually means

The dryer has flagged a problem with the thermostat that watches over the heating element, so it won't heat properly.

On these ENV06-board Electrolux dryers (the code shows as six green flashes followed by red ones on some fascias), the control board keeps an eye on the safety thermostat fitted to the heater unit. When the readings from that thermostat don't make sense, or the circuit through it is broken, the board flags E64 and refuses to run the heater. You'll usually notice the drum still turning and air moving, but the clothes come out damp and cool.

What usually causes it

  • Faulty heater thermostat (normally replaced as part of the heater unit)
  • Blocked filters or a restricted air path causing repeated overheating, which is what tips the thermostat over in the first place
  • Damaged or loose wiring between the heater unit and the board
  • Failed heating element
  • Faulty control board :
  • :in the door and any condenser unit are clear of lint":

What you can safely check yourself

Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.

  1. Clean the door filter and the secondary/fine filter thoroughly \ heating faults on these dryers very often start with lint
  2. If it's a condenser model, take out the condenser block and rinse it clear; if it's vented, check the hose isn't kinked or blocked and the outside flap opens
  3. Make sure the dryer isn't tight against a wall or stuffed in a cupboard with no air to draw on
  4. Don't overload the drum \ pack it loosely so air can pass through
  5. Switch off at the wall for a minute, then power up and start a fresh cycle to see if the code returns

When to call someone

This one usually needs an engineer once you have tried the checks above. We cover Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire and Leicestershire, and it's £66 including VAT for an engineer to come out and diagnose it — £84 in total if it's repaired on the visit with no parts needed. Any parts needed are quoted on site before we fit them — you decide. Every repair carries a 90-day workmanship guarantee.

Outside our area? The explanation above still stands — take it to a local engineer and tell them the code. Knowing it saves them time and you money.
