What E58 actually means
The board that drives the drum motor has seen more current than it should and shut the cycle down to protect itself.
Electrolux dryers with variable-speed drum motors use a separate motor control (VSC/FCV) board. If the current drawn by the motor rises above the safe limit, that board flags an overcurrent fault and halts the programme, usually with the drum stopping mid-cycle rather than at the end. It is a protective trip, so the machine will often let you restart and then fault again once the motor is under load.
What usually causes it
- Damaged or chafed wiring between the motor and its control board
- A failing drum motor winding drawing too much current
- Something stiff or seized in the drum, belt or pulley making the motor strain
- The motor control board itself at fault
What you can safely check yourself
Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.
- Turn the dryer off at the wall for a minute, then power it back up and try a short programme — if it trips again in the same place, it needs looking at
- Take out a heavy load and try it with the drum lightly loaded, in case the motor was labouring
- Clear the lint filters and condenser filter so the drum and fan are not fighting a blockage
- Listen when it starts: a rumble, squeal or drum that won't turn is worth mentioning to the engineer
