Stop using it for now. Carrying on with this fault risks further damage or a leak. Switch it off at the wall until it has been looked at.

What E54 actually means

The dryer has tried to start the drum turning, got no movement, and paused the cycle.

The control board sends power to the drum motor, then checks that it is actually running. After several failed attempts it gives up and pauses with E54. In practice you'll press start, hear little or nothing happen — or a hum with no drum movement — and the cycle stalls.

What E54 looks like on a Electrolux tumble dryer

Most people find this page having searched for what the machine is doing rather than the code itself. On a Electrolux tumble dryer, E54 usually shows up as one or more of these:

  • Machine door won't open
  • Door won't lock or click shut
  • Door lock light flashing
  • Door stuck shut with the load inside
  • Won't start even with the door closed
  • Drum not turning
  • Won't spin
  • Hums or buzzes but nothing moves

Recognise any of those? That is this fault, and the rest of this page explains what causes it and what you can check yourself.

What usually causes it

  • Drum packed too full, so the motor can't get it moving
  • A snapped or slipped drive belt, leaving the motor spinning nothing
  • Low or unstable mains voltage at the socket
  • Seized motor bearings or a failed start capacitor (the humming-with-no-turn symptom)
  • Motor or drive/transmission failure

What you can safely check yourself

Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.

  1. Turn the dryer off at the wall for a minute, then try again with the drum less than half full — an overpacked drum alone can bring this on.
  2. Take out roughly half the load and restart to see if it turns.
  3. Try the dryer on a different socket on its own, not through an extension lead or adaptor, in case the supply is the problem.
  4. Close the door firmly so it latches, then press start again.
