Stop using it for now. Carrying on with this fault risks further damage or a leak. Switch it off at the wall until it has been looked at.

What E53 actually means

The dryer's control board can no longer tell whether it is feeding power to the drum motor properly, so it has stopped the cycle.

On these Electrolux (and AEG/Zanussi) dryers the main board switches the motor through a component called a triac, and it monitors that switching with a small sensing circuit. E53 means that sensing circuit itself has failed, so the board has lost confidence in its own motor control and cuts the programme rather than run blind. The manufacturer's own fault list gives one cause only for this code: a faulty electronic board.

What usually causes it

  • Failed motor sensing circuit on the main control board
  • Board damage after an earlier motor or capacitor fault (often seen alongside E51 or E52)
  • Power surge or spike having damaged the board's switching section

What you can safely check yourself

Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.

  1. Turn the dryer off at the wall for a minute, then power up and try a cycle again — occasionally the code is a one-off latched alarm
  2. Note whether the drum hums but doesn't turn, or makes no sound at all, and tell the engineer; it helps separate a board fault from a motor or capacitor fault

When to call someone

This one usually needs an engineer once you have tried the checks above. We cover Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire and Leicestershire, and it's £66 including VAT for an engineer to come out and diagnose it — £84 in total if it's repaired on the visit with no parts needed. Any parts needed are quoted on site before we fit them — you decide. Every repair carries a 90-day workmanship guarantee.

Outside our area? The explanation above still stands — take it to a local engineer and tell them the code. Knowing it saves them time and you money.
