What E54 actually means
The control board has found that one of the relays that switches the drum motor's direction is stuck closed, so the machine has shut down rather than risk driving the motor when it shouldn't.
The motor is reversed during washing by a pair of relays on the main control board. E54 means the board has checked those contacts and found one welded shut \u2014 in Electrolux's own words, a burned relay that is permanently closed. Because a stuck relay could allow the motor to be powered when the board has not asked for it, the machine stops in a safe condition and will not carry on with the cycle.
