What E54 actually means
The machine has found a fault in the way the drum motor is being controlled, and has stopped rather than risk running the motor out of control.
On the more common Electrolux boards, E54 means the relay that reverses the motor's direction has failed \u2014 usually its contacts have welded shut, so the control board can no longer be sure which way the drum will turn. On the later inverter machines with a motor control board, the same code is used for motor over-speed: the drum has run faster than the cycle asked for, for about a minute, and after a second attempt the machine stops and drains. Either way it is a control fault, not something clogged or blocked, and it needs the board or motor circuit looked at.
What E54 looks like on a Electrolux washing machine
Most people find this page having searched for what the machine is doing rather than the code itself. On a Electrolux washing machine, E54 usually shows up as one or more of these:
- Machine not draining
- Water left in the drum at the end of the cycle
- Stops mid-cycle full of water
- Standing water in the bottom
- Drum not turning
- Won't spin
- Hums or buzzes but nothing moves
- Turns one way only
Recognise any of those? That is this fault, and the rest of this page explains what causes it and what you can check yourself.
What usually causes it
- Motor direction relay on the main board stuck closed (welded contacts)
- A failed or damaged main control board
- Speed feedback from the motor reading wrongly on inverter models
- Motor or its wiring connections at fault
- Power supply surge or spike having damaged the board
What you can safely check yourself
Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.
- Turn the machine off at the wall for a minute, then switch back on and reset the cycle \u2014 this code often won't clear from the Start/Pause button alone
- If it restarts, put it on a short cycle with a light load and see whether the fault comes back at the same point
Which Electrolux models show E54
E54 means the same thing on this model. If yours is not listed, the explanation above still applies — the code is set by the control board, not the model number.

Can I fix Electrolux E54 myself?
There are 2 checks you can safely do yourself first.
- Turn the machine off at the wall for a minute, then switch back on and reset the cycle \u2014 this code often won't clear from the Start/Pause button alone.
- If it restarts, put it on a short cycle with a light load and see whether the fault comes back at the same point.
This one usually needs an engineer once you have tried them.
How much does it cost to repair Electrolux E54?

Tried the checks and it's still showing E54?
This one usually needs an engineer once you have tried the checks above. Then it wants someone who can open it up.
What it costs, before you call: the price is the same whatever the fault turns out to be — £66 including VAT for an engineer to come out and diagnose it, or £84 in total including VAT if it is put right on the visit and no parts are needed.
