What E58 actually means
The motor drew a sudden surge of current, so the control board cut power to it and stopped the cycle.
Electrolux machines monitor the current going to each motor phase. If it spikes past the set limit (around 6A on these boards), the motor control board shuts the motor down and waits for a reset. It retries the cycle up to five times, pausing between attempts, and if the surge keeps happening it logs the fault, halts the machine and releases the door.
What usually causes it
- Drum overloaded or jammed with a trapped item, making the motor work far too hard
- Something binding the drum \u2014 a failed bearing or an object stuck between drum and tub
- Damaged or chafed motor wiring, or a loose motor connection
- Fault in the motor itself, such as a winding breaking down
- Failed motor control board (the FCV board)
What you can safely check yourself
Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.
- Turn the machine off at the wall for a minute, then back on and start a short cycle he fault will not clear while the alarm is stored otherwise
- Take out roughly half the washing \u2014 heavily overloaded drums, especially with bulky bedding, are a common trigger
- With the machine switched off at the wall, turn the drum by hand: it should spin freely and quietly, with no grinding or hard spots
- Check nothing has slipped past the seal into the drum \u2014 coins, wire from a bra, a bootlace
