Stop using it for now. Carrying on with this fault risks further damage or a leak. Switch it off at the wall until it has been looked at.

What E60 actually means

The machine hasn't managed to heat the water within the time it allows, so it has abandoned the wash.

During the main wash the control board watches how long the heater takes to bring the water up to the selected temperature. If the maximum heating time runs out and the water still isn't hot enough, the programme is stopped and E60 is shown. Typically the wash has filled and the drum has been turning, but the clothes come out cold and often still dirty.

What usually causes it

  • Failed heating element in the bottom of the drum
  • Faulty temperature sensor (NTC) giving the board a false reading
  • Wiring or connection fault to the heater
  • Control board fault on the heating circuit

What you can safely check yourself

Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.

  1. Turn the machine off at the wall for a minute, then run a short hot wash to see if the fault repeats — an intermittent reading can occasionally clear.
  2. Check you haven't selected an eco or energy-saving option, which lowers the actual wash temperature and can make a working machine feel cold to the touch.

When to call someone

This one usually needs an engineer once you have tried the checks above. We cover Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire and Leicestershire, and it's £66 including VAT for an engineer to come out and diagnose it — £84 in total if it's repaired on the visit with no parts needed. Any parts needed are quoted on site before we fit them — you decide. Every repair carries a 90-day workmanship guarantee.

Outside our area? The explanation above still stands — take it to a local engineer and tell them the code. Knowing it saves them time and you money.
