What E90 actually means
The two electronic boards inside the machine aren't talking to each other properly, or the machine's settings have gone out of step, so it won't run the cycle.
E90 is the customer-facing version of a group of internal faults (E91 to E94) covering communication between the main control board and the display board, mismatched board software versions, and configuration errors picked up when the machine powers up. Because the control side can't confirm what it should be doing, the machine stops the cycle rather than risk running blind. You'll usually get the buzzer sounding three short beeps every 20 seconds or so alongside the code.
What usually causes it
- A momentary glitch on power-up that clears itself
- Loose or damaged wiring between the control board and the display board
- Configuration data on the control board corrupted or lost
- A replacement board fitted with software that doesn't match the other board
- Failed main control board or display board
What you can safely check yourself
Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.
- Switch the machine off at the wall, leave it a minute, then power it back up — a fair number of E90s are one-off power-up glitches that don't return
- If you have a dedicated switched socket or extension lead in the circuit, plug the machine straight into the wall socket instead
- Note whether the code appears the moment you switch on or partway through a cycle — it helps the engineer
