What E96 actually means
The washing machine's control board and the software settings loaded into it don't match, so it won't run any programme.
Electrolux machines carry a configuration stored in the control electronics that has to match the actual board fitted. When the machine checks itself at power-up and finds the hardware version and the stored configuration don't agree, it flags E96 and refuses to start a cycle. Nothing mechanical has failed oiler pump, motor and drum are usually fine \wrong; the machine is stopped by its own self-check.
What E96 looks like on a Electrolux washing machine
Most people find this page having searched for what the machine is doing rather than the code itself. On a Electrolux washing machine, E96 usually shows up as one or more of these:
- Drum not turning
- Won't spin
- Hums or buzzes but nothing moves
- Turns one way only
- No function at all
- Dead — nothing lights up
- Lights flashing and nothing happening
- Programme won't start
Recognise any of those? That is this fault, and the rest of this page explains what causes it and what you can check yourself.
What usually causes it
- A replacement control board fitted without being configured for the model
- The stored configuration data has become corrupted
- Faulty main control electronics
- A previous repair or software reload that didn't complete
What you can safely check yourself
Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.
- Switch the machine off at the wall, leave it a minute, then power it back up \u2014 an occasional one-off reading can clear
- Check the programme selector is sitting properly in a detent position, not between two settings
Which Electrolux models show E96
E96 means the same thing on all 3 of these models. If yours is not listed, the explanation above still applies — the code is set by the control board, not the model number.
