What E91 actually means
The control panel and the main circuit board inside the machine have stopped talking to each other, so the wash won't start.
Your washer has two electronic boards: the display/control panel you press, and the main board that runs the motor, pump and heater. On power-up the machine checks they can communicate, and E91 means that link failed. It stops the cycle rather than run blind.
What usually causes it
- A loose or dislodged connector between the two boards
- Damaged or chafed wiring in the loom between panel and main board
- A faulty display/control panel
- A faulty main control board
- Electrical interference or a one-off glitch on power-up
What you can safely check yourself
Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.
- Turn the machine off at the wall socket, leave it for a minute or two, then switch back on — a one-off glitch will often clear
- Note whether the code returns every time you power up, or only occasionally; that's useful for the engineer
When to call someone
This one usually needs an engineer once you have tried the checks above. We cover Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire and Leicestershire, and it's £66 including VAT for an engineer to come out and diagnose it — £84 in total if it's repaired on the visit with no parts needed. Any parts needed are quoted on site before we fit them — you decide. Every repair carries a 90-day workmanship guarantee.
Outside our area? The explanation above still stands — take it to a local engineer and tell them the code. Knowing it saves them time and you money.
