What E00 actually means

The temperature sensor in the freezer compartment has stopped giving the control board a sensible reading, so the fridge freezer can no longer tell how cold it actually is.

Grundig's control board watches an air sensor inside the freezer compartment. When that sensor reads open or short circuit, the board flags E0 (shown on some displays as E00) and drops into a fallback pattern instead of guessing at temperatures — the compressor and fan run for around 20 minutes, then sit off for around 40 minutes, repeating. That keeps food roughly cold but it is not proper temperature control, so the freezer often drifts warmer or colder than the setting and the fridge side can be affected too.

What usually causes it

  • Failed freezer air sensor (the usual finding)
  • Damaged or chafed sensor wiring inside the cabinet
  • A loose or corroded plug on the sensor connection
  • Control board fault, less often than the sensor itself

What you can safely check yourself

Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.

  1. Turn the appliance off at the wall for a minute and back on — if the code was a one-off glitch it will clear
  2. Check the display isn't stuck in a demo or settings mode after someone pressed the buttons
  3. Check the doors are shutting fully and the seals aren't folded over, so you can rule out a simple warm-freezer complaint
  4. Move anything valuable to another freezer if the compartment is warming up

When to call someone

This one usually needs an engineer once you have tried the checks above. We cover Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire and Leicestershire, and it's £66 including VAT for an engineer to come out and diagnose it — £84 in total if it's repaired on the visit with no parts needed. Any parts needed are quoted on site before we fit them — you decide. Every repair carries a 90-day workmanship guarantee.

Outside our area? The explanation above still stands — take it to a local engineer and tell them the code. Knowing it saves them time and you money.
