What E04 actually means

The freezer's automatic defrost heater isn't doing its job, so ice is building up on the evaporator instead of being melted away.

Every so often the fridge freezer runs a defrost cycle, warming the hidden evaporator coil behind the freezer's back wall to clear the frost off it. The control board watches the defrost sensor while that happens, and if the coil doesn't warm up past around 15°C by the time the heater run has finished, it logs a defrost heater failure and shows this code. Cooling itself carries on as normal, so the appliance won't feel broken at first — but frost will keep accumulating, airflow to the fridge section drops off, and eventually neither compartment holds temperature properly.

What you can safely check yourself

Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.

Turn the appliance off at the socket for a minute and back on — this clears a one-off logged alarm, though it will return if the heater really has failed
Check the freezer door is closing fully and the seal isn't held open by an overfilled drawer or a stray bag of food, as warm damp air makes frosting far worse
Look into the freezer for heavy ice on the back wall or around the vents — that tells you the fault is genuine rather than a sensor glitch
Don't attempt to defrost or chip ice off with anything hard; the evaporator sits directly behind that panel
