What E15 actually means

The fan that cools the machine's heat exchanger at the back isn't turning as it should, and the control board has flagged it.

On these Grundig side-by-side models, a fan sits near the compressor at the base/rear and blows air across the condenser coil so the heat pulled out of the cabinet can escape. The control board watches that fan and logs E15 when it doesn't see the expected running signal. The fridge and freezer usually carry on cooling, but with the condenser poorly ventilated the compressor works harder and hotter, so temperatures can start drifting up and running costs climb.

What E15 looks like on a Grundig fridge freezer

Most people find this page having searched for what the machine is doing rather than the code itself. On a Grundig fridge freezer, E15 usually shows up as one or more of these:

  • Not heating the water
  • Washing coming out cold
  • Cycle takes far longer than it should
  • Machine not turning
  • Won't spin
  • Hums or buzzes but nothing moves
  • Turns one way only
  • Not cooling

Recognise any of those? That is this fault, and the rest of this page explains what causes it and what you can check yourself.

What usually causes it

  • Condenser fan motor worn out or seized
  • Dust, fluff or pet hair packed around the fan and coil at the back
  • Something obstructing the fan blade, such as packaging or debris that has fallen behind the appliance
  • Loose or damaged wiring to the fan motor
  • Control board no longer reading the fan's feedback signal correctly

What you can safely check yourself

Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.

  1. Turn the appliance off at the socket for a minute, then back on — if the fault was a one-off reading, the code may not return.
  2. Pull the appliance forward if you can do it safely and vacuum the visible grille and vent at the base and rear; dust build-up here is very common and is often the whole problem.
  3. Check nothing has fallen down the back — bags, boxes, cardboard — that could be sitting against the fan.
  4. Make sure there is a gap between the back of the appliance and the wall, and that the base vent isn't blocked by flooring or a plinth.
  5. Listen at the back when the compressor is running: a hum with no airflow, or a rattling/grinding noise, is worth mentioning when you book the repair.

Which Grundig models show E15

E15 means the same thing on all 2 of these models. If yours is not listed, the explanation above still applies — the code is set by the control board, not the model number.
